The advantages and disadvantages of a digital representation in a historical as well as modern context can be understood by examining its uses across time. In its basic form, digital representations help capture information and allow it to be copied and replicated identically. For example, the invention of writing enables the exchange of information because it uses a fixed set of symbols that, when combined, create words that carry meaning. As mentioned in the “The Evolution of Technology: A Journey with Jim Al-Khalili” video, the earliest examples of writing can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia in Iraq. Symbols would be written into clay tablets to represent information. One advantage of a writing system is that since it only contains a fixed set of symbols or letters, it makes it easy for individuals to learn and memorize the symbols. Having a fixed set of letters allows for predictability, meaning that if someone is unsure of a symbol, they can use a process of elimination to determine which symbol it is, unlike if there were an infinite number of symbols to represent information. The disadvantage of this system is that people must be taught the symbols and how to use them. This helps explain why learning to read and write in other languages can be extremely difficult, since different languages use different symbols, sounds, and grammar rules to convey the same meaning. Additionally, in many ways, Morse code can be seen as an evolved form of communication. Just as people are not born knowing how to read and write, with the invention of the telegraph, individuals had to learn Morse code in order to understand the meaning of the dots and dashes being transmitted. These examples demonstrate that digital representation can make communication easier by allowing ideas and information to be transferred quickly, but these systems are only effective if individuals understand the symbols and meanings being represented. In a modern context, digital representation allows for images, photos, and videos to be copied and distributed across the internet. An advantage of this is that multiple people can have access to the same media at any time. For example, families may want to share and preserve videos of important moments, such as a baby’s first steps. The ability to share media makes it possible for relatives in different locations to access videos and memories instantly. However, one disadvantage of this is that it becomes extremely easy to alter and fabricate photos and videos, making it difficult to determine what is real and what is fake.
